15 years of civil war left Nicaragua devastated. You
may remember the US backed Contras fought the
communist Sandinista government. The conflict ended in
1990, with both parties agreeing to a democratic form
of government. As Nicaragua struggled through it's
birth pangs it was dealt another horrendous blow.
Hurricane Mitch literally destroyed the embryonic
national infrastructure and caused the deaths of
thousands. Although Nicaragua now boasts a stable
government, and has made many democratic reforms it
is still the 2nd poorest country in the Western
Hemisphere, and there is great need.
